There is a serious problem here.It was orginally written for violin in the early 1940s, but then it was transcribed by Copland himself in 1988 for clarinet. There is a recording of Victoria Soames playing it, and you can either order the CD from Amazon.com (which also has the Poulenc sonata!) or you can download it from the web.Price, complete in beautiful black "sharkoid" covered case, lined with genuine silk plush, $150. Nickel silver, of course, does not contain any silver but rather is a nickle alloy. $150 was a lot of money in 1930. ($2,097.34 in today's dollars, according to the CPI calculator.) The barrel is slightly shaped/curved like J-Lo (narrower at top, wider towards the bottom). Wood throughout the clarinet is straight grained, glass-smooth inside and out. So if your conductor asks you to sound a tuning note concert Bb, you would need to play a C on your Bb clarinet. In orchestra, to sound the concert tuning pitch A, you would need to play B on your Bb clarinet. Hope this helps clear up the mystery a bit. I believe it is model 35 but they don't put the model number on their basses. I suspect it is from the 70s but they didn't have a listing on the Selmer web page. I play one that I believe is model 31 or 33 number U648. One fun fact to consider is that all woodwinds (to my knowledge) operate on the left is top, right is bottom. So it would be a little strange if the clarinet was the only one in inversion. In my own playing I haven't noticed any significant advantages or struggles of playing the clarinet with a left hand dominance. The Clarinet BBoard. The best A clarinet I have ever played was a 104,xxx instrument that a student has. It played like a Bb clarinet and just didn’t spread like most A clarinets tend to. No problem. However, these old clarinets may need a non-standard mouthpiece (bore, chamber) to get in tune.
