The best way to mine start metal SP (IMO) is to set up a wheel of pain and a break-down-weapons station near a Cimmerian camp, then capture and break fighter thralls. They all have star metal weapons (and some have mace+shield which gets you double) so you break them, take their weapon, dismiss them, and then break the weapon down into Star metal.
